Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport
Project Manager: Jack Barclay
Date: 1997 - present

Albion has conducted the bird monitoring program at San Jose International Airport since 1997. (J. Barclay has been personally doing this work since 1989.) in 1997 we prepared an airport Burrowing Owl Management Plan that integrates long-term management of the resident burrowing owl colony with the airport's master plan of improvements for the next ten years. We have successfully implemented this plan for several large airport improvement projects. We document the burrowing owl colony size and breeding success each year and band burrowing owls in artificial burrows. This colony has increased substantially in response to management and it remains one of the longest continuously monitored owl colonies on record. We prepare annual reports on burrowing owl management at the airport and have prepared scientific papers describing burrowing owl management and population dynamics at the airport.
