Reasearch Context/Testing Plan Revisions and Phase II Excavations for the Doyle Drive Corridor Project, The Presidio, San Francisco
Client: Jones & Stokes/San Francisco County Transportation Authority
Project Manager: Clinton Blount
Date: 2001 - 2003

In conjunction with Jones and Stokes Associates, Albion revised an existing research context/testing plan designed to mitigate impacts to cultural resources that might be encountered during construction for the Doyle Drive Rehabilitation Project.

The testing plan was implemented in November and December 2001, and included a program designed to identify archaeological resources in the APE, delineate site boundaries, and assess significance for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and their importance for purposes of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). The project employed exploratory trenching in portions of the project envelope to locate buried prehistoric sites. The trenching effort unearthed a buried shell midden within the San Francisco Presidio that is likely to be site CA-SFr-6, also known as "Presidio Mound". The midden was covered by fill sand that was imported during marshland "reclamation" work in preparation for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) held in 1915. Albion's cultural team also led the Native American Consultation efforts, coordinating with over 14 Ohlone representatives.
