Lincoln County, Death Valley National Park
Project Manager: Mark Giambastiani
Date: 2001 - 2002
In order to comply with directives of the Lincoln County Land Act, and to meet its responsibilities under the National Historic Preservation Act (Section 106), the Bureau of Land Management enlisted Albion Environmental, Inc. and SWCA, Inc. to conduct a Class III intensive survey of 13,500 acres and complete testing and data recovery work at identified archaeological sites. This work was completed during three separate field stints between May and October 2001. Archaeological resources found during the study were evaluated through testing and mitigated through data recovery. In all, some 37 sites (35 prehistoric and 2 historic) and 146 isolate finds (accounting for 247 items) were discovered on project lands.
Five kinds of sites were identified during the inventory. Most sites were hearth features or clusters thereof (17), others were lithic scatters (10), lithic quarries (6), residential camps (3), or rock constructions (1). Cultural materials recovered from project sites testify to a focus of occupation throughout the study area during the Gypsum Period (4,000-1,500 years ago) with some evidence of more recent habitation as well (between ca. 800 and 250 B.P.). One of the sites, a large residential camp with a dense cultural deposit, was considered significant and has been recommended as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) listing.
